Kakinada Gateway Port set to be commissioned by early 2027

The Kakinada Gateway Port, a ₹2,620 crore project by KGPL, is set for commissioning by early 2027. This infrastructure development includes new rail connectivity and will significantly boost regional maritime trade capacity.

Strategic Expansion of the Kakinada Maritime Hub

The upcoming commissioning of the Kakinada Gateway Port, slated for early 2027, marks a significant milestone in India's coastal infrastructure development. Located within the Kakinada Special Economic Zone (KSEZ) at Kona, this greenfield project represents a major investment of ₹2,620 crore by Kakinada Gateway Port Private Limited (KGPL), a subsidiary of Auro Infra Private Limited. By adding a third port to the Kakinada coastline, the region is positioning itself as a pivotal maritime gateway for industrial trade.

Engineering Milestones and Connectivity

A critical component of the project's success is the completion of the 3.3-kilometre-long breakwater facility, encompassing both North and South segments. This structural foundation is essential for ensuring safe navigation and berthing in the port area. Furthermore, the integration of logistics is bolstered by the Indian Railways' consent to construct a dedicated railway track connecting to the port. With an estimated investment of ₹400 crore, this rail link will be instrumental in ensuring the efficient movement of bulk commodities from the hinterland to the port.

Phased Operational Strategy

The port is designed with a phased development approach to ensure operational scalability. The initial phase focuses on handling a diverse range of industrial exports, specifically coal, granite, fertilizers, and aluminium. With a planned annual capacity of 16 Million Metric Ton Per Annum (MMTPA) across three berths, the facility is poised to handle significant domestic and international cargo volumes, thereby enhancing the economic output of the Kakinada district.

Future-Proofing with LNG Infrastructure

Beyond traditional bulk cargo, the port’s second phase demonstrates a forward-looking approach to industrial energy needs. Plans for a dedicated Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) terminal are set to redefine the port's utility. This terminal will specifically cater to the maritime trade requirements of companies actively engaged in oil and natural gas exploration in the region, aligning the port with the broader national objective of increasing the share of natural gas in India's energy mix.

Economic Implications and Future Trends

The commissioning of this port is expected to catalyze further industrial growth within the KSEZ. By lowering logistics costs and providing modern maritime infrastructure, the port enhances the competitiveness of local manufacturers. As India continues to prioritize the development of Special Economic Zones to attract private investment, the Kakinada Gateway Port serves as a blueprint for how integrated infrastructure—combining rail, maritime facilities, and energy terminals—can drive regional economic prosperity and long-term sustainable growth.
