Ludhiana: 2 booked for ATM break-in bid near Verka plant

Ludhiana police have booked two individuals for an attempted ATM robbery at a Bank of Baroda location. Authorities identified the suspects using CCTV and technical surveillance twenty days after the August 5 incident.

Investigation into Ludhiana ATM Break-in Attempt

The Incident and Police Response

On August 5, an attempted robbery occurred at a Bank of Baroda ATM situated near the Verka milk plant in Ludhiana. According to reports, the suspects targeted the facility after it had been secured for the evening. Banker Santosh Kumar of Jagraon, who filed the official complaint, noted that the ATM cabin was locked at approximately 7:00 PM before the perpetrators arrived to force their way inside. Although they managed to breach the shutter of the cabin, the suspects were ultimately unsuccessful in accessing the cash vault within the machine and fled the scene.

Identification Through Surveillance

Following the failed heist, the Sarabha Nagar police launched an investigation that spanned nearly three weeks. By utilizing CCTV footage and advanced technical surveillance, investigators were able to track the movements of the suspects and confirm their identities. This delay highlights the challenges law enforcement faces in identifying perpetrators who operate under the cover of darkness and attempt to hide their tracks, yet it also underscores the growing effectiveness of digital forensic tools in modern policing.

Legal Implications Under New Statutes

A significant aspect of this case is the application of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS). The suspects have been booked under Sections 305, 62, and 3(5) of the BNS. This reflects the recent shift in India's legal framework, as authorities transition to these new penal codes for prosecuting criminal activities. The charges indicate a serious intent to commit theft and damage to property, signaling that despite the failed outcome, the legal repercussions for attempted financial crimes remain stringent.

Security Challenges for Banking Infrastructure

The incident near the Verka milk plant serves as a reminder of the persistent vulnerabilities inherent in standalone ATM kiosks. While these machines provide essential financial access to the public, they often become targets for criminals who assume they can disable security measures through brute force. The fact that the perpetrators fled empty-handed suggests that while the physical shutters may be vulnerable, the internal security hardening of modern ATMs remains a significant deterrent to theft.

Future Trends in Financial Security

Moving forward, such incidents are likely to prompt banks to enhance their physical security protocols, including more robust alarm systems and increased frequency of surveillance monitoring. As law enforcement agencies continue to leverage technical surveillance, the risk-to-reward ratio for potential ATM robbers continues to decline. This case demonstrates that even in instances of failure, the trail left by criminals—ranging from physical evidence to digital footprints—will increasingly lead to apprehension and prosecution under the updated legal statutes of the land.
