The South Coast Railway zone has marked its first 100 days with significant infrastructure progress and project sanctions. With ₹54,479 crore in active projects, the zone is focusing on modernization, safety upgrades like Kavach, and expanded passenger facilities.
A Milestone for South Coast Railway: 100 Days of Progress
The South Coast Railway (SCoR) zone has officially crossed the 100-day milestone of its operational journey. Headquartered in the strategic hub of Visakhapatnam, this new zone represents a significant administrative and logistical restructuring within the Indian Railways network. By consolidating the Visakhapatnam, Vijayawada, Guntakal, and Guntur divisions, the zone now manages an expansive network of 3,532 route kilometres and 6,455 track kilometres, positioning itself as a vital artery for the nation's transport infrastructure.
Strategic Investments and Infrastructure Growth
A centerpiece of the zone’s early success is the massive influx of capital, with ₹54,479 crore currently committed to various projects. Among the most critical developments is the ₹300-crore Visakhapatnam Yard Remodelling project, which will introduce six additional lines and expand capacity through platforms 8 to 14. This project, bolstered by modern electronic interlocking systems, is essential for reducing congestion and improving the throughput of both freight and passenger traffic in one of the region's busiest terminals.
Enhancing Operational Capacity and Safety
Beyond simple expansion, the zone is prioritizing technological integration and safety. A notable achievement in these first 100 days is the installation of the 'Kavach' automatic train protection system on approximately 100 locomotives. This rollout reflects a broader national commitment to enhancing rail safety through indigenous technology, ensuring that as the zone scales its operations, it does not compromise on the security of its passengers or cargo.
Economic Impact and Freight Dominance
Economically, the SCoR is already functioning as a regional growth engine. With an anticipated originating revenue of ₹15,500 crore and annual freight loading exceeding 100 million tonnes, the zone is a cornerstone of the regional economy. The Guntakal-Ballari quadrupling project serves as a clear indicator of the zone’s focus on high-capacity freight corridors, which are designed to support the burgeoning industrial requirements of the hinterland and coastal sectors.
Passenger Experience and Future Outlook
Passenger services have also received focused attention through the development of three 'Amrit Bharat' stations. These upgrades signify a shift toward modernizing the passenger experience, balancing heavy-duty infrastructure work with consumer-facing improvements. As the zone moves past its initial 100-day phase, the focus will likely remain on executing the remaining pipeline of the ₹54,479 crore investment, ensuring that the integration of its four divisions continues to drive efficiency and reliability across the South Coast region.
