Tamil Nadu Minister P. Venkataramanan has inaugurated two new paddy storage facilities in Cuddalore district with a 7,000-tonne capacity. Funded by NABARD, these structures aim to protect harvested crops from weather damage.
Strengthening Food Security in Tamil Nadu
On October 31, 2026, Tamil Nadu Minister for Food and Civil Supplies, P. Venkataramanan, officially inaugurated two significant paddy storage facilities in the Srimushnam taluk of Cuddalore district. This infrastructure development represents a strategic move by the state government to fortify the post-harvest supply chain. By establishing permanent, roofed storage solutions, the state is addressing the critical need to preserve agricultural output immediately following procurement from local farmers.
Infrastructure and Financial Backing
The project, which incurred a total expenditure of ₹11.56 crore, was made possible through financial assistance from the National Bank for Agriculture and Rural Development (NABARD). This collaboration underscores the importance of institutional credit in modernizing rural agricultural infrastructure. The initiative includes a 2,000-tonne capacity facility at Melapalayur (costing ₹3.83 crore) and a larger 5,000-tonne capacity facility at Thethampattu (costing ₹7.73 crore), providing a combined total storage capacity of 7,000 tonnes.
Mitigating Post-Harvest Losses
A primary challenge in Indian agriculture has historically been the degradation of grains due to inadequate storage during monsoon seasons or high-humidity periods. By constructing these permanent structures with structural roofing, the government aims to mitigate the risk of crop damage that occurs when paddy is left in open or makeshift storage at direct procurement centers. This shift toward permanent infrastructure is a vital step in reducing post-harvest losses, which directly impacts the income security of the farming community.
Strategic Importance to Cuddalore
Cuddalore district serves as a significant hub for paddy production in Tamil Nadu. The selection of Srimushnam taluk for these facilities indicates a targeted approach to support regions with high procurement volume. By centralizing storage near the procurement points, the logistical burden on farmers is reduced, and the efficiency of the public distribution system is enhanced by ensuring that grain remains in high-quality condition before being transported to mills or warehouses.
Future Trends and Policy Implications
This initiative reflects a broader trend in Indian agricultural policy: the transition from temporary, reactive storage measures to permanent, resilient infrastructure. As climate patterns become increasingly unpredictable, investments in weather-proof storage facilities are likely to continue across the state. This project sets a precedent for how NABARD-funded initiatives can be effectively utilized to create long-term assets that protect the livelihoods of smallholder farmers and stabilize the food supply chain for the state's residents.
