Sabarmati to get Rs 307-crore maintenance hub for 24-coach Vande Bharat trains

The Ministry of Railways is upgrading electrification infrastructure on the Delhi-Mumbai route to support 160 kmph operations and Vande Bharat services. Simultaneously, a Rs 307-crore maintenance hub is being built in Sabarmati to handle 24-coach Vande Bharat trainsets.

Modernizing India's Rail Backbone

The Indian Ministry of Railways is currently undertaking a massive infrastructure overhaul to modernize the Delhi-Mumbai route, a critical artery for the nation's economic and logistical connectivity. By upgrading electrification across 596 track kilometers (TKM) in the West Central Railway's Kota Division, the government is laying the groundwork for high-speed rail travel, specifically targeting operational speeds of up to 160 kmph and the seamless integration of Vande Bharat services.

Advanced Traction Power Systems

Central to this upgrade is the implementation of the 2×25 kV traction power supply system. By commissioning this advanced technology across a 128 TKM section between Salabad and Murhesi Rampur, the railways are addressing the energy-intensive demands of modern, faster rolling stock. This transition is essential, as the standard legacy systems are often insufficient to support the high power requirements of heavy freight trains and the rapid acceleration profiles of Vande Bharat trainsets.

Supporting the Vande Bharat Ecosystem

Beyond electrification, the logistical sustainability of the Vande Bharat fleet is being bolstered by the development of a dedicated maintenance hub in Sabarmati, Ahmedabad. With an investment of Rs 307 crore, this facility represents Phase II of the Sabarmati Integrated Coaching Depot (ICD). This strategic investment is designed specifically to handle the maintenance of 24-coach trainsets, ensuring that the fleet remains operational without the inefficiencies of long-distance transit for repairs.

Operational Efficiency and Localization

The Sabarmati hub is a game-changer for Western Railway’s operational capacity. By providing specialized sheds for heavy repairs, wheel maintenance, and complex mechanical servicing, the facility significantly minimizes downtime. Previously, trainsets often required relocation to distant depots for major interventions; this centralized hub streamlines the maintenance lifecycle, allowing for faster turnaround times and improved fleet reliability.

Future Trends and Economic Impact

The dual focus on electrification upgrades and localized maintenance infrastructure signals a broader trend toward a more robust, high-performance rail network. As India moves toward increasing the frequency of Vande Bharat services, these technological and structural investments will be the primary drivers of success. By boosting the load-bearing capacity of the electrical grid and ensuring world-class maintenance standards, the Ministry of Railways is effectively preparing the Delhi-Mumbai corridor for a new era of high-speed passenger and freight transportation.
